The view on BPNG is spot-on. This is due to the focus, culture and work ethics shifting over time because of the top managements' focus on personal interests and protecting their small empires and giving little time to the core issues that affect the economy and the little people. Recently 2 very senior positions were created and with no justification and advertisements internally or externally these positions were filled. This speaks volume of the kind of people who ran that organisation not to mention the PNG economy.

Aaron Batten has a good grasp of the PNG situation. The Government now needs to ensure that their Natural Gas resource is developed quickly. The wealth created must be passed around the villages and there is no better way of doing this than by developing their Education infrastructure. Build schools and train teachers. Also invest in Medical services.

I agree with Satish Chand's comment.
It will not be easy to ensure that resource revenues will be spent on the things needed to create the basis for sustained development that reaches the villages.
One historical point. Responsible economic management was restored by the Morauta Government in 1999, well before 2002.

This is an excellent and a very balanced assessment - congratulations Aaron! If there was ever an opportunity to 'make hay while there is sunshine', then it is now! The Somare government has close to a full term to run. The public coffers are as full as ever. They could overflow when the LNG project comes on-stream. What is badly needed now is some foresight and decisive actions to: (i) improve service delivery; (ii) reduce costs of doing business including a concerted effort at reducing crime and the crime-image of this beautiful nation; and, (iii) consolidate the macroeconomic gains in terms of low and stable inflation, a stable Kina, and fiscal sustainability. It can be done and the time to act is now! One word of caution, however: in this land of the unexpected, forecasting is hazardous business.
